China has so far evacuated 32,000 of its citizens out of Libya

The huge operation  involves chartered and military planes and a naval frigate.

A Chinese warship is in the Mediterranean. How unusual is it?

Jonathan Holslag, Research Fellow, Institute of Contemporary China Studies, Vrije University, Brussels

On the warship: China has been sending out its Navy more frequently in the pursuit military diplomacy and also visited ports in the Mediterranean. It’s the first time however that it is deployed for an evacuation. Very unique in regard to Libya is that Beijing has actually deployed both its Navy and Air Force. So after the anti-piracy operation in the Gulf of Aden, it demonstrates that China is gradually extending the borders for using its military in defending its overseas interests. A key question remains, however, to which degree it will therefore work with other powers. Will new non-traditional threats help overcome distrust with powers like India and the United States, or will such distrust make it more difficult to develop coordination in regard to political instability in places like Africa? The jury is still out.
